Choosing An Underwater Digital Camera

So…I want an underwater digital camera. Something I can take to the beach and not worry about getting sand in it. Something I can go out in the waves and take a shot or two of surfing. I don’t need to be using it for any serious scuba diving, so I it doesn’t need to go deep, maybe 10-20 feet max.

Probably the most use I will get out of the camera is in adverse weather. Sometimes it is either raining outside, or there is kind of a mist in the air. I think an underwater camera would be perfect for this scenario. Also, shooting waterfalls. They’re a pain! The wind changes directions and you get soaked.

So, that’s what I’m looking for. It would also be nice if it were small enough to put in my pocket. And of course, the best quality photos possible. Hmmm… what are my choices?

Canon Powershort D10

I’m kind of leaning towards this one. It seems a little on the “large” side, but I’ve heard you can still carry it in your pocket without a problem. And it also has some of the best reviews as far as the image quality is concerned. In every review I read, people loved this camera “at first”. Then, after a month or so, it developed problems such as it leaked and the camera was ruined. I’ve also heard that some people have contacted Canon regarding getting their camera repaired, because it was under warranty. But Canon has responded that water damage is not covered under their warranty. That would be kind of a bummer.

Pentax Optio W90

This is the new kid on the block and was just released Summer of 2010. It looks pretty cool, different from most other models. What sets it apart is a series of LED around the lens to help light up objects when using macro photography. That’s actually pretty cool, although I dont know how much I would use it. The only other bad reviews that are consistant is that the video quality is poor. Again, that shouldn’t be a factor for me.

Any other suggestions or ideas?
